So, it all started from an idea
back when I was
in our little condo. I wanted a home theater. I started by using our
existing
speakers, adding a cheap center channel and surrounds and a Dolby
Pro-Logic
receiver. It blossomed from there! In November of 2000, we started looking for a new house. Well, an older house. We looked at houses in the area that were 30-50 years old, but I didn't like any of them, because I could not get a good enough room to do a front projection theater like I wanted. Either the rooms were just too small or they had a fireplace in the wrong spot or..... So, we decided to move farther away from our existing home, so that we could get a larger home that had what we wanted, a large backyard with room for a pool and a room that I could make as a dedicated home theater. |
| After waiting for almost a year for the house to be built, we were able to move in. After that, it took some time before I could actually get to build the theater. I went to the AVS Forum and started soaking all the knowledge that I could from the other members and decided on a path that would lead me to the end result that I wanted. Along the way, my wife and I changed our minds on some things, such as the windows that we covered up, the extra column that I built and acoustically treating the walls, instead of simply doing carpet below and paint above ear level. | ![]() |

We figured out the colors and then started
working. I made
the platform first, painted the ceiling next and then started on the
never-ending
task of furring strips, soundboard and batting. Then, I was ready for
the acoustically
transparent fabric and the thousands of staples that come with that
task. Next was the wood trim and accent lighting. When it came time to order the reclining love seats, we chose a color that would match the ceiling almost perfectly! After all that work, I still had to build more speakers to match what I already had. I created a new center channel speaker and moved the small one to the back, and then built two more rear speakers to match. The whole time, using identical drivers and crossover components, so that the speakers would be perfectly timbre matched. |
| For the lighting control, I chose to use Hunter
Douglas
Duette Powerise blackout shades, and a four zone Lutron Grafik Eye
lighting
controller. The Philips Pronto remote control takes care of everything.
The four lighting zones are 1, Screen/equipment 2, Seating
3, Sconces and 4, Rope lighting (at the edge of the riser and
above
the crown molding). For sound, I have six speakers that I designed and built, a custom built 12" powered subwoofers that goes down to 19hz at 112db, and a 10" powered subwoofer from Parts Express with six Aura bass shakers (one for each seat). All in all, there are 1410 watts of power for that. Denon 3802 driving the speakers, Parts Express 250 watt plate amps driving the subs and the shakers. We have a Sony VPL-HS51A LCD 16x9 projector shooting onto a 100" diagonal Stewart Luxus Delux Grayhawk screen. HD is brought in via Panasonic's HD DirecTV receiver also connected to a Channelmaster 4228 antenna mounted in the attic. DVD displayed via an upconverting LG DN191H DVD player. |

After all the time and effort it took to get
everything
installed and set up, I then had to do all the little things, such as
trim
the doors to match the room, build an equipment rack (this is my second
equpment rack as I didn't like the first one), build my reel tables,
vent the
projector
into the attic......
At this point, I pretty much just enjoy what I have! Be sure to check the links at the top to see how we built the theater, tips I have added based off of what I learned and equipment we are using, in detail.
